The “Lighting of the Nubble” painting by Master Artist J. Charles captures the annual Lighting of the Nubble in York, Maine. The event takes place in December to celebrate the holiday season.
Built in 1879 and standing 41 feet tall, the Cape Neddick Lighthouse stands on Nubble Island about 100 yards off Cape Neddick Point. During the windy winter months, the temperature would occasionally drop so low that the flow of the lamp oil would slow, causing the typical 12 mile visible light to dim.
