The “Port Lighthouse” painting by Master Artist J. Charles features the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Built in 1791 by direct orders from George Washington and funding from then Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, the lighthouse on Portland Head was constructed using local materials from fields and the surrounding coast line.
During the American Civil War, the tower was raised 20 feet to its current height of 80 feet above ground. This helped to guard against shipping raids that were common during the war.
